Turning Point Hotline

Turning Point of Lehigh Valley, who works to eliminate domestic violence, is looking for volunteers to work their 24-hour Helpline.  To do this you must be 18 years or older.  This would be a great opportunity for Human Services students!  They’re also looking for people to sit at tables at community fairs and let people know that this service exists!  Contact Kerry Magliane, 610-797-0530×227, kerrymtplv@rcn.com if you are interested!

Donated clothes for professionals

The Perfect Fit in Allentown is a project that provides low-income women with clothing for job interviews and assistance with resumes and interview skills.    There used to be a similar program for men, which dissolved, but the women at Perfect Fit are trying to start up a program now!  They have the space and some donated clothes, but are desperately in need of a group of students to come by for a day and go through the clothes, sort them by size, etc.  If you’re interested, please give me a call 610-799-1635 or e-mail lschwartz@lccc.edu for more information!  This would be a great club or group project that you could get done over break to count towards your fall or spring community service requirements!

Holiday Opportunities

Are you looking for a way to spread some holiday cheer?  The Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley has compiled a list of opportunities dealing with holiday activities and taking place on holidays.  I would make my own list, but let’s face it, the Volunteer Center is a great resource!  Check it out here!

Clubs who have not yet submitted their Club or Organization Service form for the semester might want to look through the list and organize a service project!  Then fill out the form which you got at Club Council or print a new one from the documents section of this blog.  Each club should have one form submitted by the end of the semester!

Faces of Homelessness

Here is a news story about the Faces of Homelessness panel from the National Coalition for the Homeless that was at school before Thanksgiving.  Later that night they spoke at DeSales, which was covered by Channel 69 News.  Let us know if you attended the event and what you thought of it!

Mentoring Program

We are recruiting mentors for the Spring semester!  You would be volunteering every Monday from 3:15-5:15 until the end of the semester at the Fairgrounds Academy in Allentown.  This school is an alternative school where students attend half the day and must be working for the other half the day.  The mentoring/tutoring program is run through Communities in Schools who would organize the after school activities and the trainings for the mentors.  For more information please contact me at LSchwartz@LCCC.edu or 610-799-1635.

The Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley

Did you know about the great resource we have in the Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley?  Local agencies can become members and reap all kinds of benefits.  Students and student leaders may find their Volunteer Opportunities page useful in searching for sites to volunteer for.  Additionally they coordinate the Holiday Hope Chest campaign which we’ll talk about tomorrow!

While reading through the listings of volunteer opportunities they publish in the Morning Call each Sunday I saw that the Volunteer Center is looking for volunteers!  They are looking for people with good writing, communication and basic computer skills who are available anytime Monday through Friday 8:30 to 4:30.  Call Sandie at 610-807-0336 or e-mail skelly@volunteerlv.org if you are interested!  I guarantee that they’re good people!

Trick-or-treating for canned goods

LCCC’s Phi Theta Kappa was out trick-or-treating around the offices for canned goods today.  They’ll be out again tomorrow from 1-2:00 in the afternoon but if you miss them feel free to drop off non-perishables in my office or in the bins in the cafeteria, student union, and library.  Help PTK make Halloween a little less scary for area families!

Girls on the Run

GOTR

Girls on the Run is a running program for elementary age girls.  The goal of the program is to improve self esteem and to encourage healthy lifestyles.  Girls on the Run Lehigh County (website seems to not be working right now) is looking for volunteers to run with the girls or to help at their race on Saturday November 14 at 9am at Upper Saucon Township Community Park, Center Valley.  The 5k is the culmination of the 10 week program for the girls and is non-competitive.   There should be a form on the website or you can call them at 1-888-499-2699 to get involved!

Do good while you’re surfing the internet

I know students are busy, but I also know you’re all sitting at computers for inordinate amounts of time trying to write papers!  So while you’re there here are two of my favorite websites that make a tiny impact!

GoodSearch.com – Through GoodSearch you choose a charity and then each time you search through them instead of your old favorite search engine, the organization gets about $0.01.  The more people you have searching, the more impact you make!  I search on behalf of a very local organization and love checking in to see how much my searches have earned!  I’ve added the search to my Firefox search engines, which makes it so easy.

GamesThatGive.com – GamesThatGive is perfect for procrastination!  You play games like solitaire and memory and it keeps track of how long you’ve played.   Ads show up behind your game and on the sidebar which is where the money comes from.  You can make a quick account and then set your favorite charity.  I like to switch it up every few weeks.  The only bad thing about GamesThatGive is that after it updates each day it shows how long you’ve spent playing games.  But hey, at least you’re doing some good while you’re at it!  I could have made some charities a fortune if I knew about this in college!
